Blizzard says WoW Forever just had the biggest launch in WoW history by peak concurrent players! Welcome to Azeroth After Dark. I'm Aldric Vale, here with Dorra Stonehymn, our Earthen dwarf co-anchor, who reads patch notes like bedtime stories and calls Classic and Forever home. Glad to be here. I'm made of stone, so if I look calm, trust me, inside I'm very excited. Oh, I can tell. Coming up: a zone you can see but can't reach, a hidden three percent experience boost, life without a Dungeon Finder, Game Masters back in the world, and more.
Let's start on the coast. So there's a coastline in WoW Forever that's been taunting players since launch. Icy Veins reports the developers have confirmed you'll eventually visit Gilneas, the Worgen zone! Good. I'm tired of watching people swim for it. You can see it from Hillsbrad Foothills and Silverpine Forest, but sharks or worgen get you long before you arrive. Okay, Dorra, walled off on purpose, or just unfinished?
Let's get the developer interview up on the big screen. On purpose. In the MrGM interview, Josh Aggrend Greenfield calls it a tease for the future, and for now it's the same Gilneas from Cataclysm onward. Here's how he put it. And he says they plan to do a lot of different things with it once we get there. No date's been announced. But I'd bet that boat ride from Southshore to Auberdine just got a lot more staring.
Now, a reason to stick around if you're leveling. Icy Veins flags a hidden quest line that ends with the Cozy Sleeping Bag, and a buff of up to three percent extra experience from all sources. Three percent from everything? How does a sleeping bag pull that off? You lie on it. Look at this number. Every minute you stay, you get a two hour buff for one percent more experience, up to three percent, and it persists through death.
And it's a resting area too, so you can log out right there and keep earning rested experience! Warcraft Tavern's guide says you need to be at least level 14, starting in Westfall for Alliance or the Barrens for Horde. Fair warning, Icy Veins calls the quests quite cryptic. Warcraft Tavern adds that anyone in your party can use the bag, and it vanishes if you wander about 100 yards away. Speaking of getting places, this one changes how you find a group.
Icy Veins reminds you there's no Dungeon Finder in WoW Forever. No automated matchmaking, no teleports, no summoning stones. Instead, you get the Looking for Group tool that was added to Classic Fresh and Season of Discovery. Hang on. What's the catch with that tool? Oh, there's a list. Listings only show name, class, level and role, you can't see where a player is, and there are no filters to fill your group.
Which is where addons come in! L F G Forever adds filters and shares player locations, and L F G Group Bulletin Board scans chat, though it hasn't been formally updated for Forever yet. And check the travel time before you join a group across the world. Now, some real nostalgia. Wowhead reports Game Masters appeared in person to celebrate the WoW Forever launch. Real G Ms, out in the world? Where'd people spot them?
At least two confirmed sightings in Thunder Bluff, plus at least one Alliance location. Wowhead says the last time G Ms showed up in numbers was the Classic Anniversary launch. That gives me chills. Back in Vanilla, a G M might help with your ticket and crack a joke. Is this going to keep happening? Wowhead says nobody knows yet if it's a one-time event. But here's the detail players loved about the names.
Snowstorm! I love it. And Icy Veins has even more of these encounters, including one player meeting a Game Master right at the Wailing Caverns entrance. These days, Icy Veins notes, most support tickets get solved without anyone appearing before players. So this felt like the good old days. Okay, I need the joke. Please tell me there's a joke. There's a joke. A G M named Laurisperra told one player this: how many worgen druids does it take to chase a cat up a tree?
Three. One to be the worgen, one to be the cat, one to be a tree. Perfectly deadpan, as always. Now stay with me, because Blizzard just put Forever in the record books. Wowhead spotted Blizzard's post on X. WoW Forever achieved the biggest launch in WoW history by peak concurrent players. The biggest launch in WoW history! Get it up on the big screen! Settle down. There were two milestones in that post, here they are.
The other is the highest number of returning players in WoW history. So how many players are we actually talking about, Dorra? Blizzard didn't give a number. Records, not counts. Still, a Windows Central headline says P C gamers are calling it the smoothest launch in Blizzard's M M O R P G history. What a lineup. Gilneas on the horizon, a cozy three percent boost, old-fashioned grouping, Snowstorm G Ms and a record launch, all in WoW Forever.
These stories came from Icy Veins and Wowhead, with extra detail from Warcraft Tavern's guide. The full posts are linked with the episode. Want more WoW Forever news like this? Subscribe. I'm Aldric, that's Dorra, and we'll see you next time!
